4. Measurement & Maturity Models – providing companies with ways to assess their readiness and track progress.

Imagine if I gave you longitude and latitude instead of my address, this would be hard for you to navigate. Or imagine if legislation was published in a different format each time. This would be so confusing trying to understand where everything is. That is the thing! When we build standards, we start building with them. The form of the standard creates a common space where we create things. Because building with standards creates a common understanding of how things are and should be described – It’s clear that standards make our work easier.

And if we understand something, that also means that we can decide on how it should work, we can optimize and synergize. We link companies and organizations through data and use our ingenuity to create new tools and services. This is empowered by standards as the common language, for example, remuneration from delays, optimizing logistics, creating Artificial Intelligence modules for aviation and so many more. These tools should work for all and not just one if they are to truly work! Synchronize all schedules, use AI for all airports.

But why open? Imagine if you needed to pay money to use the English language, wouldn’t that be something awful! If that was the case, people would opt for other cheaper and universal languages as the standard. Open Standards are the only way to move forward for long-term implementation.

We are basing our work on Open Standards because it makes sense, from societal and professional perspectives. And we should advocate for them whenever we can not only for the economic gains they bring but also because they are sustainable!

At AETHON Engineering, this question guided our work on the HS4U project, a major EU initiative aimed at designing safer, smarter cruise ships for the post-COVID era. Having led the work on Technical Research (WP3) and Data Protection, we took on one of the project’s most critical challenges: understanding how passengers behave during emergencies and how that behaviour can guide smarter ship design and crisis response.

Predict to Protect: The Passenger Behavioural Model

Our team developed a data-driven Passenger Behavioural Model, combining real-life experiments, onboard simulations, and ship topology data.

Using AI and behavioural science, the model identifies patterns in how people navigate ship spaces like corridors, restaurants, elevators, or cabins in both normal and high-stress conditions. These insights power real-time simulations and feed into HS4U ecosystem, enabling automatic reconfiguration of spaces, better crew response, and targeted health protocols.

The results speak for themselves:

• 80% accuracy in passenger movement prediction
• Real-time integration with onboard AI systems
• Scalable design for multiple ship layouts

Beyond Prediction: A Step Toward Safer Ships

This model is a cornerstone for a new era of passenger-centric safety. By forecasting behaviour, ships can adapt their response before chaos sets in from directing traffic away from infection zones to adjusting HVAC systems or isolation protocols automatically.

HS4U proved that smart design is not only possible, it’s necessary. And the Passenger Behavioural Model is one step closer to ships that think ahead.

While regulation (e.g., GDPR, EUCS, Data Act) lays the foundation for control, technical sovereignty requires more than policy. Ιt demands infrastructure ownership, trusted interoperability, and ecosystem-scale coordination.

It’s a sovereignty issue.

That’s why we stepped up as a key partner in NOUS, one of the most ambitious Horizon Europe projects ever launched to build a secure, ethical, and high-performance European Cloud. Not just for today but for the next generation.

The NOUS Project: Europe’s Digital Reset

At its core, NOUS aligns with and complements existing initiatives such as GAIA-X, European Alliance for Industrial Data and Edge, and European Data Spaces.

It’s a bold new vision:

– A federated cloud architecture designed for European industry and science

– Interoperable with HPC, quantum computing, AI, and edge devices

– Built on trust, transparency, and open standards

– Fully aligned with the EU Data Strategy, GDPR, and Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI.
