About the role

We are currently looking for a Systems Integrator / Lead Tech on behalf of a trusted partner of AETHON Engineering.

The role focuses on the hands-on management and support of Microsoft environments, network infrastructure, virtualization, backups, and day-to-day technical operations. We are looking for a practical, reliable, and solution-driven professional who can keep systems stable, resolve issues efficiently, and contribute to the continuous improvement of the IT environment.

What you will do

Manage and support Microsoft systems, services, and infrastructure;
Administer Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy environments;
Support Microsoft 365, Entra ID / Azure AD, users, access rights, and related cloud services;
Work with virtual machines and virtualization platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V;
Monitor systems, handle alerts, investigate issues, and resolve technical incidents;
Support backup, restore testing, and basic disaster recovery procedures;
Troubleshoot network infrastructure, including firewalls, switches, VPNs, routing, and connectivity issues;
Support migrations, upgrades, integrations, and infrastructure improvement projects;
Document configurations, changes, incidents, technical decisions, and operational procedures;
Contribute to the standardization, security, reliability, and continuous improvement of IT environments.

What you will bring

Experience in systems administration, network administration, IT support, systems integration, or a similar technical role;
Strong knowledge of Microsoft technologies and infrastructure environments;
Practical experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy;
Experience with Microsoft 365 and Entra ID / Azure AD administration;
Experience working with virtual machines, virtualization platforms, and backup systems;
Good understanding of networking principles and infrastructure troubleshooting;
Ability to diagnose problems in a structured way and resolve incidents efficiently;
Clear communication skills, strong documentation habits, and attention to operational detail;
Ability to work independently, take ownership, and collaborate effectively as part of a team;
Valid car or motorcycle driving license and access to an available vehicle for work-related needs.

What we consider a plus

Knowledge of PowerShell or other scripting tools;
Experience with monitoring, patching, and remote administration tools;
Experience with firewalls, routing, switching, VPNs, and secure connectivity;
Experience with disaster recovery and business continuity procedures;
Experience working in an organized IT support or managed services environment;
Knowledge of secure access, MFA, endpoint protection, and basic infrastructure security practices;
Experience supporting migrations, upgrades, or multi-system integration projects;
Familiarity with IT documentation, ticketing workflows, and operational standardization.

About the role

We are currently looking for a Director of Data Science & AI to lead our Data Science & AI Department and help turn data and artificial intelligence into actionable insights, production-ready solutions, and measurable business impact across AETHON’s products and projects in all company’s verticals. In this role, you will combine hands-on technical contribution with strategic leadership, team coordination, stakeholder engagement, and governance of data-driven innovation. The position covers the full lifecycle of data and AI solutions, from data collection, analysis and model ideation to deployment, monitoring, continuous improvement, and responsible AI practices.

What you will do

Lead and coordinate the Data Science & AI Department, setting priorities, standards and technical direction;
Work alone or as part of a team to execute projects’ envisioned work and prepare deliverables in a timely fashion;
Design and develop modelling and engineering tools that will be integrated in company products or used as part of project analysis;
Oversee the full ML/AI lifecycle, including problem framing, exploratory data analysis, model selection, validation, deployment, monitoring and retraining;
Prepare and present the outcomes of your work clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders;
Engage partners and customers to ensure that requirements are met and feedback is documented, negotiated and incorporated;
Execute and supervise data analytics and AI activities across all sectors of the company;
Lead, mentor and develop a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, AI engineers and data professionals;
Support data governance, responsible AI, security, privacy and compliance practices, including GDPR, ISO 27001 and EU AI Act considerations;

What you will bring

5+ years of experience in a relevant field, including experience in a senior, lead or managerial role;
MSc in a field relevant to applied mathematics, statistics, computer science or engineering;
Proven knowledge of a programming or scripting language at professional level;
Strong knowledge and experience in statistics, data analysis and applied machine learning;
Familiarity with Machine Learning/Deep Learning algorithms and frameworks, such as PyTorch or TensorFlow;
Ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for executives, customers and non-technical stakeholders;
Understanding of data governance, model quality, reproducibility, responsible AI and regulatory compliance;
Excellent knowledge and usage of the English language;
Analytical thinking, exquisite verbal and written communication skills, collaborative attitude, team spirit and out-of-the-box thinking.

What we consider a plus

Proven knowledge of Machine Learning/Deep Learning algorithms and frameworks;
Experience with generative AI models, techniques and toolbox, such as proprietary LLM APIs, Hugging Face libraries, RAG pipelines, vector databases or LLM evaluation;
Proven knowledge of Python and data visualization tools;
Knowledge of designing, implementing or working under Agile project management schemes;
Experience with Docker and CI/CD pipelines, such as GitLab CI/GitHub Actions, and infrastructure-as-code, such as Terraform;
Experience with MLOps/LLMOps tools, experiment tracking, model registries or model monitoring;
Experience leading a team to deliver excellent technical results;
Experience in research, publications, patents, research grants or technical proposal writing;

Open Standards: A Shared Language for Humanity’s Next Chapter – By Alex Papacharalampous

I have been arguing, for a good part of my career, for the use of open standards. Open standards are a common language for describing an asset. In the cities, this can be the schedules of Public Transport or the Post Codes. It can be simple or complex and in different domains, health, logistics, maritime, and legislation, but the underlying idea is the same, that our world is data, and these data require a common and universally understood representation.

Imagine if I gave you longitude and latitude instead of my address, this would be hard for you to navigate. Or imagine if legislation was published in a different format each time. This would be so confusing trying to understand where everything is. That is the thing! When we build standards, we start building with them. The form of the standard creates a common space where we create things. Because building with standards creates a common understanding of how things are and should be described – It’s clear that standards make our work easier.

And if we understand something, that also means that we can decide on how it should work, we can optimize and synergize. We link companies and organizations through data and use our ingenuity to create new tools and services. This is empowered by standards as the common language, for example, remuneration from delays, optimizing logistics, creating Artificial Intelligence modules for aviation and so many more. These tools should work for all and not just one if they are to truly work! Synchronize all schedules, use AI for all airports.

But why open? Imagine if you needed to pay money to use the English language, wouldn’t that be something awful! If that was the case, people would opt for other cheaper and universal languages as the standard. Open Standards are the only way to move forward for long-term implementation.

We are basing our work on Open Standards because it makes sense, from societal and professional perspectives. And we should advocate for them whenever we can not only for the economic gains they bring but also because they are sustainable!

Rethinking Passenger Safety at Sea: What We Learned from HS4U – by Alex Papacharalampous

What if a ship could predict passenger movement in a health crisis and respond in real time to keep everyone safe?

At AETHON Engineering, this question guided our work on the HS4U project, a major EU initiative aimed at designing safer, smarter cruise ships for the post-COVID era. Having led the work on Technical Research (WP3) and Data Protection, we took on one of the project’s most critical challenges: understanding how passengers behave during emergencies and how that behaviour can guide smarter ship design and crisis response.

Predict to Protect: The Passenger Behavioural Model

Our team developed a data-driven Passenger Behavioural Model, combining real-life experiments, onboard simulations, and ship topology data.

Using AI and behavioural science, the model identifies patterns in how people navigate ship spaces like corridors, restaurants, elevators, or cabins in both normal and high-stress conditions. These insights power real-time simulations and feed into HS4U ecosystem, enabling automatic reconfiguration of spaces, better crew response, and targeted health protocols.

The results speak for themselves:

80% accuracy in passenger movement prediction
Real-time integration with onboard AI systems
Scalable design for multiple ship layouts

Beyond Prediction: A Step Toward Safer Ships

This model is a cornerstone for a new era of passenger-centric safety. By forecasting behaviour, ships can adapt their response before chaos sets in from directing traffic away from infection zones to adjusting HVAC systems or isolation protocols automatically.

HS4U proved that smart design is not only possible, it’s necessary. And the Passenger Behavioural Model is one step closer to ships that think ahead.
