Industry 4.0 gave us unprecedented efficiency. It redefined manufacturing, brought automation to scale, and enabled the development of new products and services. But let’s be honest: it was machine-centric, not human-centric.
The result? A system obsessed with technology, often blind to social and environmental consequences. Efficiency was achieved, but resilience was not.
That’s why Industry 5.0 is not just another upgrade but a correction.
From Machines to Humans
Industry 5.0 aims to put humans back at the centre of industrial progress. By integrating AI, IoT, robotics, and data analytics with human creativity and labour, it seeks to create industries that are not only efficient but also sustainable, adaptable, and inclusive.
The shift is essential, but the barriers are real:
- Many companies still lack basic awareness of what Industry 5.0 entails.
- SMEs fear the risks of transition (costs, training, cybersecurity, and uncertainty).
- Social and environmental impacts are hard to measure, let alone implement.
Enter PROSPECTS 5.0
This is where the Horizon Europe project PROSPECTS 5.0 steps in. Its ambition is clear: overcome these barriers and accelerate Europe’s transition.
How? By focusing on five high-impact areas:
- Awareness & Consolidation – training, education, and the Industry 5.0 Stakeholder Engagement Guide.
- De-risking Transition – real-world use cases, benchmarking, and tools like the Industry 5.0 Best Practices Guide and Adoption Toolkit.
- Inclusive Technology Diffusion – supporting SMEs, start-ups, and scale-ups in adopting advanced technologies without being left behind.
- Measurement & Maturity Models – providing companies with ways to assess their readiness and track progress.
- Collaborative Innovation – building ecosystems where industry, academia, and policymakers work together.
This is not about glossy visions. It’s about evidence, tools, and roadmaps.
AETHON’s Role: From Vision to Platform
At AETHON, we are proud to lead the work on patterns, trends, and assessment within PROSPECTS 5.0. Our goal is simple but ambitious: build the framework and platform that allows companies to see where they stand and where they need to go.
This is how we make Industry 5.0 concrete: by giving businesses clarity instead of buzzwords.
Our Opinion
The lesson from Industry 4.0 is clear: technology without people is fragile.
Europe cannot afford to treat Industry 5.0 as a distant ideal. The tools are being built, the evidence is being gathered, and the guidance is being written. Now is the time to adopt, not delay.
Industry 5.0 is Europe’s opportunity to build industries that are competitive because they are also sustainable, resilient, and human-centric. The choice is ours: lead the change or lag behind.
