Transport & Mobility
Transport and mobility are two interrelated concepts. Transport is the physical moving of people and goods from one location to another. It can be efficient, sustainable and smart which requires understanding of travel patterns, users’ needs & wishes, infrastructure’s capabilities, vehicles’ capabilities, legal restrictions, impact on quality of life, economy and the environment. Mobility, as transport, can also be efficient, sustainable and smart but, while the transport concept encompasses an a hard-level of analysis, mobility extends the scope to a soft-level, extending the scope of assessment and solutions to information, coordination and communication. AETHON provides services that tackle both the “hard” and “soft” level of analysis, individually and holistically (both aspects together).
Transportation in the European Union
The transport industry of the European Union employs more than 13 million people (more than the total population of Greece or Belgium) and accounts for more than 6.3% of the EU’s GDP. Congestion, found mainly in and around urban areas, accounts for more than 100 billion € (1% of EU’s GDP) while transport is ranking second as the most polluting sector in the EU.
The European Union and other organisations are addressing the soft aspects of mobility and transport through various strategies such as the Fourth Railway Package, Flightpath2050, Maritime Transport Strategy and many more (especially for road transport and logistics).
EU is targeting interoperability, coordination and communication and we, engineers and solution-makers, must translate the goals to actionable and tangible measures providing transport and mobility solutions.
Digitisation of mobility
Europe and the world are moving towards more smart solutions that encompass not only traditional engineering aspects but also software engineering aspects. Cities, governments and organisations are calling for better connectivity and more smart solutions that are translated in digitised means. The emergence of 5G, Automated Vehicles, Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence and many more software engineering concepts in combination with more complex transport connections and more users’ needs, has made the creation of solutions for the transportation system a multidisciplinary ordeal, one that AETHON can proficiently tackle.
Sustainable solutions for sustainable transport
We have in-depth knowledge of the latest technologies in transport and beyond that enables us to provide efficient solutions. Solutions need to go beyond the current scope of the problem and become adaptable to changing future needs. Creating a sustainable solution that “withstands the test of time” requires innovative and progressive thinking; this is AETHON’s strong point and is achieved through multidisciplinary teams of engineers that think out of the box.
Inclusion and accessibility
We envision a transportation system that does not only tackle all possible scopes holistically but one that empowers all of its users, in any location at any time. Solutions must tackle gender equality, people with reduced mobility or other disabilities and enable them with equal access to the transportation network and the designed solution. Providing accessibility to all users of the network on equal terms is a need that we in AETHON include in all our analyses, at the impact or solution creation process.

We are solution providers
Creating solutions for Transport and Mobility must consider infrastructure, vehicles and how they are utilised. The analysis required for creating solutions is divided in two levels: strategic and real-time. In AETHON we study various aspects for both levels ranging from infrastructure characteristics, to behavioural analytics.
The purpose of our analysis is to model the existing conditions and create an understanding on the impact of various changes which becomes the basis for solution creation. For example, changing a ship or train schedule can impact on travel time, customer satisfaction and multimodal transport efficiency.
But that is not all, solutions need to assess capability of adoption by stakeholders and create a system that empowers stakeholders to use them. Solutions must also be adaptable to changing dynamics of the network and people and ensure safety and security. Our transportation engineering team can tackle most of the aforementioned topics but by the inclusion of our project management and software development team into solution creation, AETHON can tackle the entirety of any transportation and mobility subject and beyond.
